The problem
Most provision matrices live in a file only one person can open. A formula gets dragged one row too far, a rate is typed over, or two versions circulate at once. The provision changes and nobody can say why.
At year-end the auditors ask how the loss rates were derived, what sits behind the forward-looking adjustment and who approved the overlay. If the workings were not kept, reconstructing them takes weeks.
Each period, someone has to pull the ageing report, update the macroeconomic inputs and prepare the journals by hand. That is usually a senior person, and the time comes out of review.
How it works
The trail is written as you go.
Upload the receivables ageing or exposure data from a spreadsheet or ERP export. You map the columns once. Each file is checked for gaps and duplicates before it can be used in a run.
Set the ageing buckets, segments, historical loss rates and forward-looking adjustments. When a value changes, the platform saves a new version, who changed it, and the reason given.
Run the calculation, review the results and approve the period. The exported tables carry the run ID, the assumption version and the change history.
Approaches
A lot of ECL tools stop at IFRS 9. This one also runs IPSAS 41, so a government-related entity can use the same workflow.
Lifetime expected credit losses from initial recognition, calculated through a provision matrix. Used for trade receivables, contract assets and lease receivables.
A three-stage model. Exposures carry a 12-month ECL while credit risk is stable and move to lifetime ECL once it has increased significantly.
